When is Freshers week?
Beginning on move in day on the 26th September and finishing on the 11th. We’re still working on your freshers timetable, with things going on each and every night, so join our Harry French Hall Facebook page and keep your eyes peeled.
What is our Freshers theme?
Our theme for this year will be revealed closer to the start of freshers week. These themes follow through to your freshers t-shirts that you will be given on move in day and provide an easy way for you to recognise people from your own hall. Click here to see past and current themes.
What do I need to bring for Freshers?
You’ll be able to buy everything you need in Loughborough so don’t get stressed about forgetting anything. For freshers all you’ll need is drink (if you want) and fancy dress. The themes will be announced with the freshers timetable, so give it a glance and have a think about costumes, but other than that, just play it by ear when you’ve arrived
Will lectures be going on during Freshers?
Yes, lectures will begin on the first Monday (1st October) but lecturers won’t be asking much of you until after freshers
What Freshers tickets do I need to buy?
None! Once you've payed your hall subs, you're covered for all hall events for the year, we’ll be running through anything that it doesn’t cover when you arrive, and you’ll have the option to pay then. Follow this link to pay your hall subs: https://www.lsu.co.uk/onyourside/hall/harryfrench/
When can I move in?
The official move in day for Harry French is the 26th, you won’t be able to arrive earlier than this, but if you can’t make it and need to arrive later, you’ll need to email Unite to organize picking up your keys
I don’t drink! Can I still do freshers?
Of course! Be prepared that people will be asking you why you don’t drink, but don’t shut yourself in your room thinking that you’ll be the odd one out, come out and meet people, you can still go out and share the fun without drinking.
Is there WiFi?
Loughborough offers campus-wide WiFi through eduroam, this extends to Harry French so that you’ll be able to walk from your room to your department without a dropped connection – pretty snazzy. Speeds are very quick and rooms also offer ethernet connections if you want to be wired.
I’m worried I’m not going to make friends!
So long as you don’t lock yourself away I can guarantee you’ll meet many people with similar interests and so on. Everyone during freshers is in the same situation as you are. There are 400 students in Harry French, and almost 12,000 students in Loughborough. Trust us, you’ll make friends.
Will I get signal on my mobile?
Some rooms as with almost all halls of residence will get lower reception due to the way they were designed. Every room I’ve been in has had signal (albeit low) however, and with the WiFi you’ll begin to just migrate over to WhatsApp anyway, aswell as being able to use iMessage for your iPhone/iPad/Macbook.
How far is Harry French away from everything?
Check out the 'location' page. Despite being technically off campus, Harry French is closer to the Union and certain departments than many on-campus halls, and is by far the closest to town.
When will my student finance (maintenance loan & grant) come through?
Three times a year, at the beginning of term in September, January and April. You’ll have to crack into your savings/overdraft to make it through the first few days of freshers, as your loan will likely not have been deposited into your account by this time.
Can I have guests?
Officially, to keep in ordinance with the fire safety regulations, people with guests should contact the warden so that they can be accounted for. Unofficially, nobody cares and you can have people stay with you whenever you’d like.
Can I take my car?
First years usually are denied parking permits, but a few weeks after term has begun speak to the Harry French reception and they’ll likely let you register for one. Permits are £300 for the year.
Where can I put my bike?
You aren’t allowed to keep bikes in your room, but you can use the bike sheds around Harry French. Keys are available from the reception for a £15 deposit.
Do I need a TV licence?
No, you’ll probably receive letters stating you do need one along with every student in the country, but they aren’t allowed on campus to actually check if you’ve got a TV in your room, so these letters are just used to guilt trip people.
How do I do my laundry?
There are 2 laundry rooms in Harry French. Washes are £2.60 and driers cost £1.20. They now run through the Circuit top up system, where you will be able to add credit online, no need for loose change!
Is insurance included?
Possessions Insurance for the duration of your stay is included. This covers a range of belongings within your room, including sports and electrical equipment, clothes and frozen food. It does not include bicycles kept on campus. The student room insurance provided for you focuses on covering some of the items in your room for theft, fire and flood risk. Laptops, tablets and phones are not covered outside of your room so you may wish to consider taking out additional cover to protect these essentials. Endsleigh will be around on move in day if you wish to upgrade.
If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with the hall.
